May 12-18 is National Women’s Health Week

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is marking a week-long observance of Women’s Health. In a statement about 2013’s National Women’s Health Week, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius points to the role of women as health care decision-makers in their families. Mothers, wives and daughters are often the first and primary care giver when a family member falls ill, and yet many women may overlook their own personal health.

Research!America members like WomenHeart and the National Vulvodynia Association support research into health risks and challenges that are unique to women. Cancer research advocates like the American Cancer Society provide funding for research on breast and cervical cancer, among many research areas. The Society for Women’s Health Research not only supports research and education for women’s health, they have been a vocal advocate for funding of research. In 2012, federal funding for women’s health research was over $33.6 billion dollars, thanks in large part to the efforts of these organizations. Patient and research advocacy groups like these and other Research!America members help women fight disease, cope with health challenges and receive better medical treatment.

This week, women across the country are encouraged to take time to invest in their own health.
